Barra Alipús A Taste of Oaxaca in the Heart of Mexico City
Located at Guadalupe Victoria 15, Centro, Tlalpan, 14000 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico and reachable at +52 55 6363 4375, Barra Alipús has built a reputation as one of the most authentic mezcal and dining experiences in Mexico City. Visitors often describe the place as slightly overpriced but worth it for its warm atmosphere, attentive staff, and vibrant outdoor seating where conversations flow as smoothly as the mezcal.
The spirit of Barra Alipús
Barra Alipús is more than a restaurant. It is an homage to Oaxacan culture, cuisine, and mezcal tradition. The moment you arrive, the mood is set by rustic yet elegant decor, mezcal bottles lining the shelves, and the aroma of freshly prepared dishes inspired by ancestral recipes. The staff are known for their hospitality, always ready to explain the nuances of mezcal varieties and suggest pairings with the food. For travelers from Australia seeking a memorable cultural experience in Mexico, this venue provides an ideal blend of authenticity and comfort.
Mezcal at the heart of the experience
The star of the menu is mezcal. Guests can indulge in a Vuelo Mezcalero, a curated tasting flight that highlights the diversity of flavors from smoky notes to fruity undertones. Drinks such as Pasión de Verano Cóctel con Mezcal or the simple Cócteles de Mezcal are refreshing ways to enjoy this traditional spirit. A standout is the Mezcal San Juan con notas ahumadas, which pairs beautifully with small plates or hearty meals. Alongside mezcal, craft beers like Cerveza Artesanal Páramo de Colimita provide variety for those seeking something different.
A menu that tells a story
Food at Barra Alipús is deeply rooted in Oaxaca’s culinary heritage. Signature dishes such as Caldo Tlalpeño and Enmoladas Oaxaqueñas bring comfort and flavor in equal measure. Adventurous diners often rave about Queso Fundido con Chapulines or Guacamole con Chapulines y Chicharrón, where crunchy grasshoppers add a unique twist to classic recipes.
Other highlights include:
Molotes de Plátano with rich fillings and a sweet-savory balance
Memelitas Oaxaqueñas, traditional corn cakes topped with beans and cheese
Cochinita Pibil, slow-cooked pork with tangy achiote flavors
Tamal de Amarillito and Tamal de Chocolate, perfect examples of the kitchen’s creativity
The variety makes it easy to share plates, giving everyone a chance to taste the breadth of flavors.
Drinks that complement every dish
In addition to mezcal, Barra Alipús pays special attention to non-alcoholic options. Tejate, a pre-Hispanic beverage made with cacao and maize, stands out for its cultural significance and refreshing qualities. Cocktails are carefully crafted, balancing mezcal’s intensity with tropical fruits, citrus, or herbal notes. The beverage menu ensures that whether you come for dinner or a casual drink, there is always something that feels tailor-made.
Comfort and atmosphere
One of the reasons Barra Alipús continues to receive praise is its ability to create a welcoming space for everyone. The venue offers breakfast, dinner, and small plates, making it versatile for any occasion. Families appreciate the availability of high chairs, while groups of friends enjoy lingering at outdoor tables. The pace is relaxed, giving guests the chance to savor food slowly and let conversations stretch late into the evening.

Great food and mezcal. For sure a great place to eat if you are near Centro de Tlalpan. Sadly there is not a lot to do near but its a nice place to visit!
I enjoyed the Mezcal taster of 5. We were asked to order food with drinks but that was not enforced on the night. Slightly overpriced but a good atmosphere for chatting at the outside tables.
